Toyota Makes a U-Turn on Autonomous Cars

Toyota spends $10 billion a year on research, more than any other automaker except Volkswagen. That pays for endless incremental improvements in everything from lithium batteries to seatbelt design, but such tweaks may not be enough anymore if Toyota is to remain the world’s top seller of cars.

The development of autonomous vehicles now threatens to change the very essence of driving. In the race to develop that technology, Toyota lags behind several of…

The Toyota Prius Will Have Solar Panels

Toyota this week unveiled a new model of its Prius that includes the option for a solar panel roof, which doubles the vehicle’s electric range to 37 miles from 16.4 miles on a single charge.

That’s a far cry from the 100- to 200-mile range that full-electric car manufacturers such as Tesla and Nissan promise, but Toyota’s moving in the right direction and is betting consumers still want a hybrid experience…

Toyota wants cars all over the world to join hands

A couple dozen years from now, we'll be looking at our network of globally connected mobility devices (who knows if they'll call 'em cars) and wonder how we ever made do in such primitive times as these. But the future is still a ways off. Hell, we don't even have a singular vehicle communications platform deployed across the globe. Thankfully, Toyota's working on exactly that.

In collaboration with KDDI, a Japanese…

Toyota is about to be richly rewarded for what seems, in retrospect, to be a corporate no-brainer: combining its expertise in hybrid drivetrains with buyers’ insatiable appetite for small crossover SUVs.

The ??? 2016 Toyota RAV4 Limited AWD hybrid fills the gap Ford created when it bewilderingly stopped building the popular hybrid version of its popular Escape compact SUV a few years ago.

It combines the features people love most about SUVs — all-wheel drive and a…

Artificial intelligence framework now powers Toyota websites

Artificial intelligence framework now powers Toyota websites

An innovation in artificial intelligence that was described in a 2001 paper by a UCLA computer science professor has found a somewhat unexpected application: helping car buyers customize their vehicles online.

The websites for Toyota and its Lexus division both offer shoppers the opportunity to tailor their vehicle from among a range of models, colors and accessories. The software that powers the sites, called a "product configurator," is based on a logical form of artificial…
