Toyota confirms FJ Cruiser production ends this August

Toyota says it will end production of the retro-inspired FJ Cruiser this August for the handful of markets that still get the two-door SUV.

The FJ Cruiser was first introduced at the 2005 Detroit Auto Show as an off-roader inspired by the brand's cult classic FJ40 Land Cruiser.

Toyota pulled the FJ Cruiser from North American dealerships a couple of years ago, but sales have continued in Japan, China, Australia, and the Middle East…

Popular Toyota Highlander becomes minivan alternative

A measurement of the popularity of three-row crossover sport utility vehicles - such as the Toyota Highlander - is the way they have taken the place of minivans, once the family vehicle of choice.

Minivans are still the most practical and efficient passenger automobiles on the planet. They seat up to eight people comfortably with plenty of room for cargo, while also offering decent handling and good fuel economy.

In contrast, midsize crossover SUVs usually have a…

IT'S BEEN REAL (WEIRD)

SCION LEAVES WITH AN IMPORTANT, LASTING LEGACY
It’s Been Real (Weird)

Scion began at the dawn of a new century, as a new effort to understand a brand new generation.

“We were looking at Generation Y. Back then, they were too young to buy cars,” says Jim Lentz, the brand’s first vice president and now Toyota Motor North America CEO. “We knew that we needed to understand that generation really well or we were going to be challenged…

Despite Tesla's success, Toyota hypes hydrogen cars

AP JAPAN TOYOTA FUEL CELL F I JPN

Despite all the hoopla over Tesla's and General Motors' long-range electric cars, Toyota is still making the case for hydrogen as a better alternative.

Toyota Chairman Takeshi Uchiyamada, known as the father of the Prius hybrid, believes hydrogen fuel cell cars have the greatest long-term potential for reducing energy usage and emissions for the automotive industry -- as long as an adequate refueling infrastructure is developed.

Toyota has been talking about the potential benefits of…

The Scion FR-S is Reborn as the Toyota 86 in New York

Toyota GT86 revamp for New York show

If the above Scion FR-S looks slightly different, it’s because it is. The front fascia has been tweaked and slightly shaped for 2017, the headlamps have been reworked to house more LEDs, and it’s the same story around back. The Subaru-derived boxer engine now puts out 205 horsepower and 156 pound-feet of torque, bumps of five horsepower and five pound-feet respectively. But unless you live outside of North America, the biggest change isn’t the power or the shape: It’s the new badge adorning the bonnet and decklid.

Since 2013...

Why Toyota's Scion brand may sell more cars after it's dead and buried

On Wednesday, Toyota announced plans to shutter its Scion brand, putting an end to an experiment that started 13 years ago. That the Japanese auto giant decided to wind down its long-struggling division was not a surprise. However, the timing was.

After enduring several years without new products, Scion dealers finally netted some fresh metal: the entry-level iA sedan and iM hatchback, both of which arrived last fall as 2016 models. Further, Toyota had recently…

Today’s Kids Like Toyota, So Who Needs Scion?

Toyota has made itself more appealing to youth, and today’s young car buyers have developed a taste for the brand that kids once soured on.

That’s essentially how Bill Fay, general manager of Toyota Sales U.S.A., explains why Scion is going away, 13 years after its creation as Toyota’s youth brand.

“Ten years ago, kids didn’t necessarily want to buy Toyotas as much as we wanted them to,” he…
