This summer, the Toyota Camry was No. 1 on the Cars.com American-Made Index for the second year in a row. Toyota invests heavily in American manufacturing, and operates five vehicle assembly plants and five parts manufacturing plants in the United States.
But it's not just blue-collar work that Toyota supports. Since 1973, Toyota has employed American artists -- designers -- at Calty Design Research, Inc. in California.
Why design in America?
Toyota believes strongly in creating diverse teams that can work together in a collaborative atmosphere to draw in new ideas and perspectives. Japanese perfectionism, with American swagger.
This approach paid off in 1978, with the Toyota Celica. Calty's designs for the sports coupe defined Toyota's performance segment for decades. Today, Calty provides the designs for popular new vehicles like the Toyota Camry, Tundra, Tacoma, Highlander, and Avalon, many of which are engineered and assembled in America, too.
