Toyota believes mobility is empowerment. For this reason, the automaker has introduced a new project aimed at providing greater freedom and confidence to the blind and visually impaired.

Named "Project BLAID" the device is worn around the user's shoulders and uses cameras to detect surrounds. Information is relayed to the user via speakers and vibration motors, allowing them to navigate indoor spaces with greater ease. Eventually, the project will incorporate more advanced features like mapping, object identification, and facial recognition.

“Toyota is more than just the great cars and trucks we build; we believe we have a role to play in addressing mobility challenges, including helping people with limited mobility do more,” said Doug Moore, Manager, Partner Robotics, Toyota. “We believe this project has the potential to enrich the lives of people who are blind and visually impaired.”
