Toyota Motor Corporation recently announced that it is entering a five-year partnership with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) to fund at least 28,000 new species assessments to be added to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

The Red List is a global resource that provides detailed information about the habitat, and conservation status of almost 80,000 species around the world, and the IUCN has set the goal to double that number by 2020.

"By doubling the scope of The IUCN Red List, it will become a more complete 'barometer of life,'" said Jane Smart, Global Director of IUCN's Biodiversity Conservation Group. "Toyota's grant will enhance the Red List's invaluable role in helping determine conservation policies; tracking progress toward reducing biodiversity loss; providing data for scientific research; and raising public awareness about species."

While researching and cataloging wildlife species is critical to their protection, the single largest threat to all wildlife is climate change. If you want to protect your favorite birds, flowers, fish, and frogs, the single largest thing you can do is reduce the greenhouse gas emissions of your vehicle.
