Do you often need to park your new Toyota Prius in rather shady neighborhoods/areas? If so, there's data to show that you can rest a little easier tonight, due to the fact that the Prius is one of the least stolen automobiles on the market. While the overall age shows that one in every 78 vehicles is stole, the Prius is ranked at only one in every 606 vehicles.
The report was calculated by the National Insurance Crime Bureau, which reported that between the 2008-2010 model years, the Toyota Prius was the least stolen. So, why is it so unpopular with thieves? Well, it turns out that the Prius is a "one-model car"- which means its parts aren't interchangeable with other vehicles, and anything that is stolen from a Prius must be put onto another Prius.
Frank Scafidi, a spokesman for the NICB, explains, "It could be that auto thieves are going to steal something for which there is generally a market or a need for the parts. . . we may see those numbers come more in line with what we're finding with the rest of the vehicles."1
