Toyotamay have faced several natural disasters (a tsunami, earthquakes in Japan and flooding in Thailand where manufacturing plants are located) during the last year, but that hasn't stopped the automaker from making a huge comeback as far as sales are concerned. In the first six months of 2012, Toyota sales rose 34 percent to total 4.97 million vehicles worldwide, beating GM Motors by 300-thousand vehicles and Volkswagen by 520,000 vehicles, though both of these companies saw a rise in sales as well.

Senior Vice President of Forecasting for LMC Automotive in Troy, Michigan, Jeff Schuster, explains, "Toyota has bounced back stronger than expected. We are now at the critical mid-year point in the race, and given Toyota's lead, it will be very difficult for GM to catch Toyota," while Rebecca Lindland, an industry analyst with IHS Automotive adds concerning the competition, " I'm sure GM would love to be No. 1, but they would rather be profitable so they are not going to get into a market-share race at the expense of their balance sheets." 1
