The year 2012 is quickly coming to a close, and automakers are rushing to get in some last minute sales. It's highly doubtful that any of these brands will rise to the current sales leader, Toyota, however, as the Japanese brand has recently grabbed back its title of world's largest automaker.

Overall, the auto industry will achieve record sales across the board this year, with car and truck sales expected to exceed 80 million vehicles for the first time ever. Last year, Toyota lost its crown as top automaker due to the epic challenges it faced following the 2011 tsunami in Japan. Duking it out for second place are German auto brand Volkswagen and American automaker General Motors, which has seen a steady increase in sales over the past few years.

IHS analyst Rebecca Lindland explains why the U.S. market is so important, stating, "Because the U.S. [auto market] is so large, when we have a double-digit growth it's going to propel the rest of the world. The gains can mask a myriad of sins elsewhere, because many of the other economies aren't exactly setting the world on fire."1
