Toyota is working to launch a new social networking sight in conjunction with Microsoft and the San Francisco-based Salesforce.com called "Toyota Friend." What sets Toyota's social networking site apart from the seemingly millions that are popping up everywhere you look is that instead of befriending people, on this site you befriend you car. Okay, it may seem a little creepy at first, but hear us out on this one.
The social networking site is still in its early developmental phase, but it was shown off in a Tokyo showroom. People watched with amazement as the owner of a plug-in Prius received a message from his hybrid that was named "Pre-boy." In the message, Pre-boy asked kindly to be charged overnight. After the owner complied with this request, he received another message that said, "The charge will be complete by 2:15 a.m. Is that OK? See you tomorrow."1
Okay, maybe this is a little creepy, a little like Christine perhaps? Maybe this wouldn't be so bad if Toyota made the site deliver messages in the voice from Knight Rider?
"Toyota Friend" won't just give friendly charging reminders either. Toyota plans to offer other requests into the system as well, such as notifications for when a vehicle is due for an inspection or other maintenance. The vehicle will even link its owner to a local dealership so that they can easily set up an appointment.
Drivers who decide to engage with "Toyota Friend" can also share their car-owning experiences with other Toyota drivers on Facebook, Twitter, and similar social networking sites. Of course, Toyota drivers also have the option to keep their interactions with their car private as well.
At the moment, Toyota is scheduled to launch "Toyota Friend" in Japan in 2012. While it initially it will be limited only to electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids, "Toyota Friend" will become available to more models and in more regions soon after.
You can always become friends with a new Toyota at Marion Toyota. At 3300 W Deyoung Marion, IL 62959, you'll find models like the Tacoma and RAV4. And, remember to stay tuned for more news from Toyota, coming soon!
