Don't ever let anyone tell you that Toyota doesn't take safety seriously. They're on the offensive, developing and testing new safety features everyday for use in their lineup. Among the features that are most discussed on Toyota's development table right now are light-blocking technology aimed at shielding drivers from the blindingly bright high beam lights of oncoming traffic; a heart-attack-sensing steering wheel; and a pop-up hood designed to significantly reduce the impact when a car hits a pedestrian. But, what if that last one never had to happen again?

That is the aim of Toyota's newest safety endeavor, which we here at Marion Toyota think is pretty cool. Toyota's new crash-avoidance technology is capable of calculating what must be done in order to avoid an oncoming object, and then execute those maneuvers before the driver even has time to react.

How does Toyota's new safety suite accomplish this? The answer is simple. It is done through a series of integrated cameras, millimeter-wave radar, and in-car microprocessors. Watch out Volvo, because Toyota is taking their safety up to a new level, and it won't be long before it is yet another feature to boast about in their lineup!

What caused Toyota to develop this new feature is actually the sheer number of pedestrian related accidents that occur in this country. After doing a little digging, we were shocked to discover just how common accidents like these occur in the United States. For instance, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) documented over 4,000 pedestrians were struck in the U.S, in 2009 alone. Meanwhile, another study from performed in the Washington, D.C. found that more accidents involve pedestrians in the District's crosswalks than other vehicles in the streets.
